Studio Information

Vance Music Studios was founded by Chester S. Vance Jr. in Kansas City, Kansas in 1952. The studio moved to Wichita in 1972, and since that time has been serving South Central Kansas, drawing students from a 100-mile radius. Current students represent eight different school districts. Vance Music\'s teaching staff is compromised of talented musicians with over 100 years of accumulated teaching experience. Several Vance Music instructors were fortunate enough to study with Chester. ---------- WHY CHOOSE VANCE MUSIC? -- Our instructors are innovative, always learning, they work together to best support students, are still active in the music field, experience with special need students, teach all ages, teach all styles of music, integrate music history into lessons, integrate music theory into lessons and utilize technology in the lessons. -- Your opportunities at Vance Music: one-on-one teacher to student attention, monthly practice recitals, annual Christmas recitals, participation in music contests, monthly awards & annual awards. ---------- MEET OUR INSTRUCTORS: ---------- REX S. VANCE (Vance Music Director and Instructor) teaches violin, viola, cello, piano, organ, theory and electric violin. He was a violin student of James Caesar and Beatrice Pease of Wichita State University (WSU). Rex was a longtime violin student of Leopold Shopmaker (who studied with Leopold Auer and Willy Hess) for whom the Mid-American Violin Competition is named the Leopold Shopmaker Award. Rex founded the First Baptist Church (FBC) String Orchestra. He currently performs with the FBC Orchestra, the FBC Praise Band and the Vance Music Band. In the past he has performed in the Hutchinson Symphony, Fort Hays Symphony, WSU Symphony, Friend\'s Community Orchestra, K.U. Medical Arts Symphony, and the Kansas City Kansas Symphony. Rex is a school and church orchestra clinician including genres such as: Classical,Jazz, Rock, Bluegrass, Irish, Welsh, Scottish, Old-time Fiddle, Cajun and Gospel music. He has taught clinics and/or workshops for Friends University, WSU and the Kansas American String Teacher Association (KASTA). Rex has played backup for Alvis Barnett, The Terry\'s, Parton\'s, Stutes Family, Pee Wee Reese, Craig Curry and Ernest Alexander. He is a member of the American String Teacher Association (ASTA), KASTA, Kansas Acoustic Arts Association and the Kansas Bluegrass Association. Rex is also a board member of KASTA and is a published composer and arranger. ---------- WYNONA L. VANCE (Vance Music Associate Director and Instructor) teaches: all wind and brass instruments, guitar, piano, organ and more! Wynona is a State of Kansas certified K-12 public school teacher with Master of Music Education from WSU. She specialization in Learning Disabled. She was a violin student of Leopold Shopmaker and Beatrice Pease and was a saxophone student of Jean Lansing (who studied with Eugene Rousseau). Wynona has performed in the Kansas City Kansas Symphony, the K.U. Medical Arts Symphony, and the WSU Symphony. She also sang with the WSU Singers. ---------- MARISSA J. VANCE (Vance Music Business Manager and Instructor) teaches: violin, piano, theory and electric violin. She is a violin student of Nancy Luttrell and former violin student of Rex Vance. Marissa is a jazz violin student of Mark Foley and former jazz violin student of Tom Fowler and Rex Vance. She is a jazz piano student of John Goering and former piano student of Chet and Wynona Vance. Marissa was also a vocal student of Chet Vance and Janet Vance. Marissa is currently working toward degrees in Violin Performance and Jazz Studies at WSU, as well as a Master\'s Certificate in Music Business at Berklee School of Music. She currently performs in the WSU Orchestra, FBC String Orchestra, FBC Praise Band, Vance Music Band and FBC Sanctuary Choir. Marissa is a former Concertmistress of the Wichita North High School Orchestra where she also played seven string electric violin in the Jazz Band and sang with the Madrigal Singers.. She has played backup for Ernest Alexander and Craig Curry. At the 2010 Kansas Music Educator Association Conference, Marissa accompanied the WSU A Capella Choir on the violin. She has also received two Student of the Year awards from Vance Music and has received several 1 ratings at Music Festivals. Marissa is a member of ASTA and KASTA. ---------- MEGHAN L. VANCE (Vance Music Instructor) teaches: piano, theory and violin. Meghan was a piano student of Paul Reed, John Goering, Chet Vance and Wynona Vance as well as a violin student of Rex Vance. She currently accompanies the FBC Sanctuary Choir. Meghan is a former Concertmistress of the Wichita North High School Orchestra and has performed in the WSU Orchestra, WSU Summer Orchestra, and the Wichita Youth Symphony Orchestras. She has received two Student of the Year awards from Vance Music and several 1 ratings at Music Festivals. ---------- KIRSTEN A. MOLER (Vance Music Instructor) teaches: double bass, electric bass and cello. Kirsten was a bass student of Mark Foley, Jeff Bradetich, Marcia Hatfield and Ingri Fowler. She received a BA in Music Performance from WSU. Kirsten currently performs as a bassist bassist in the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, FBC String Orchestra, FBC Praise Band and the Vance Music Band. She is also current principal bassist in the Newton Symphony Orchestra. She also sings in the FBC Sanctuary Choir. Kirsten was a finalist in the Naftzger Competition and winner of the Concerto Aria Competition at WSU. Kirsten is a former principal bassist in the WSU and Wichita Youth Symphonies and has played backup for Ernest Alexander and Craig Curry. She is a member of the International Society of Bassists. ---------- JANET E. VANCE (Vance Music Instructor) teaches: voice and piano. Janet studied voice with Dr. George Gibson, David Weber, Dr. Vernon Yenne and Janice Jaworsky. Janet toured U.S. and Europe with Continental Singers. She also performed with the vocal jazz ensemble Master’s Project, as well as the WSU Singers, WSU Opera Theatre and WSU Madrigal Singers. Janet is an experienced choir director for church & civic groups. She is a State of Kansas certified K-12 public school teacher with a Master of Music Education (M.M.E.) degree from Wichita State University.
